Tips On Handling Brake Failure.

Brake failure is largely not a issue on today’s cars provided that they are well maintained. However, a part defect, an auto mechanic’s negligence, or the purchase of an old used car from an individual can raise the odds of its occurrence. Your chances of successfully handling a brake failure will depend on the road circumstances and the actions you take.

Here are certain measures you can take to manage brake failure

Stay Calm and Never Panic

Stay calm and focus the task at hand because you'll need to control the car to avoid accidents. Don't take your eyes off the road, turn on your flashers and honk your horn to alert other drivers. Let up on the gas pedal and turn on your hazard lights. If you are on a multilane road, move to the other slow lanes on the right.

Downshift

Put your cat into a lower gear, as smoothly as possible. Applicable for both automatic and manual vehicles. Moving from D to 3, 2, or 1. Do it in the proper sequence from the highest to lowest gears. Don't be quick with this because wheels can lock up and start skidding. Do not put the car in neutral because you won't be able to downshift. Never turn off the engine because it will turn off your power steering and if you turn the key too far, it may lock your steering wheel.

Establish a brake push

If you have an anti-lock brake system (ABS), pressing firmly on the brake pedal will cause the system to rapidly pump the brakes. Sometimes this restores hydraulic pressure in the brake lines and produces some braking. If you don’t have ABS, quickly pump the brakes. Lastly, do not be alarmed if you feel a heavy pulse coming from the brake pedal. This is normal with anti-lock brakes

Use your parking brake to help further slow your vehicle.

Your parking brake will not slow your vehicle as quickly as your regular brakes, so be patient. Also, your parking brake can lock up your wheels if applied too quickly with too much pressure. Apply your parking brake slowly and be wary of wheel lockup. If you have a hand brake, keep the release button engaged (this is the button on the front of the handle). This allows you to fine tune the amount of brake pressure you’re applying. Note: Don’t use the hand brake when traveling more than 40 mph.
